Mayura Wannama (Peacock Dance)
Mayura Wannama is one of the most graceful elements of Kandyan dance, inspired by the movements and elegance of the peacock. Traditionally performed in the hill country temples of Kandy, it reflects the peacock’s divine symbolism in Buddhism, where the bird represents purity and beauty. Dancers mimic the gentle opening of wings, proud head movements, and rhythmic steps, creating a vibrant, flowing performance. The costumes often include feather-like designs and vivid colors, enhancing the visual poetry of the dance.
